Visual memory as a window into the nature of mental representations

Abstract:听Mental representations are often treated as discrete symbolic units, but analyzing patterns of behavioral errors reveals a richer structure. Using visual memory as a testbed, we show that measuring similarity spaces through systematic behavioral experiments lets us understand phenomena previously attributed to discrete mechanisms as emerging naturally from the geometry of high-dimensional representational spaces. This approach bridges mathematical models of similarity and decision making with empirical behavioral data, providing insights into how the mind represents both simple visual features and other, richer concepts.
