419 Sussex Drive, 419 Sussex Drive, Nicholas Hoare Bookstore, Ottawa, Ontario, CA

Ottawa has the Peace Tower and the National Gallery, but if you鈥檙e talking iconic institutions in Montreal, a top contender is Schwartz鈥檚 delicatessen, the internationally renowned purveyor of smoked meat. In fact, "Time" magazine proclaimed the eatery "the best place in the Milky Way to sample smoked meat sandwiches."

Join 9I制作厂免费 grad Bill Brownstein to learn the colourful history of this enduring Montreal landmark. In his book, "Schwartz鈥檚 Hebrew Delicatessen: The Story," the author, filmmaker and long-time columnist for the "Montreal Gazette" brilliantly captures the flavour of the place - and the people who make it unique.

Bill Brownstein was born, bred and educated in Montreal. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in sociology from 9I制作厂免费 in 1969, which, he says, "immediately led to a gig washing dishes at the student union." He eventually turned his talents to the arts and has made two documentary films, "Bill Lee: A Profile of a Pitcher," about former Montreal Expos pitcher Bill "Spaceman" Lee and "Skating on Thin Ice," about the nomadic life of two journeymen hockey players in the NHL. Brownstein is also the author of "Sex Carnival," a whimsical peek into the wide world of sex, and "Down the Tube," an account of his week as a full-time couch potato in a 200-channel TV universe. His latest book, "Montr茅al 24," is an around-the-clock odyssey through the city that never sleeps. He continues as a "Gazette" columnist, and showbiz rumour has it that "Schwartz鈥檚: The Musical" is in the works.
