Alumni Education presents "Book to Big Screen: "Away from Her""
Join fellow alumni for our inaugural Book to Big Screen event
and explore how a literary work is adapted to the cinema. Enjoy a
screening of the film "Away from Her", based on the short story by
Alice Munro. A discussion will follow on how this timeless tale was
transformed for the silver screen.
Professor Alanna Thain, BA’95, who teaches cultural studies at
9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ, and freelance book critic Juliet Waters will
moderate what promises to be a freewheeling exchange.
Remember to read the short story first! And be sure to take
advantage of a special 10% discount on "Away from Her" at the
9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ Bookstore (3420 McTavish Street).
Book to Big Screen is a joint initiative of the 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ Alumni
Association and the Concordia University Alumni Association.
"Away from Her" explores the suffering that comes when one aging
spouse departs emotionally from the other. Fiona has Alzheimer’s
disease and her husband must place her in an institution. To his
horror, he watches Fiona establish a romantic bond with another
patient who is also suffering from dementia. Their relationship
forces him to confront his own history of infidelity.
The short story appears in Alice Munro’s book of the same name. The
short story was originally published as "The Bear Came Over the
Mountain" in Munro’s collection "Hateship, Friendship, Courtship,
Loveship, Marriage".
The film "Away From Her" is the directorial debut of Canadian
actress Sarah Polley. It was launched at the 2006 Toronto
International Film Festival and appeared in the 2007 Sundance Film
Festival.
