Book Talk with Andy Lamey, author of "Frontier Justice: The Global Refugee Crisis And What To Do About It"
Andy Lamey is a Canadian journalist and academic. His writings
have appeared in many publications, including the TLS, the
National Post, Maclean's, The New
Republic and The Walrus, and he has produced several
radio documentaries for CBC's Ideas program.
His book Frontier Justice: The Global Refugee Crisis And What
To Do About It (Random House Canada) is intended to counter
some of the misconceptions about refugees that commonly appear in
the media. It draws on interviews with prominent members of the
refugee NGO community and proposes a new framework of refugee
rights. The book examines contemporary refugee controversies in
Europe, North America and Australia, with an extensive discussion
of refugee issues in Canada. The Canadian subjects it covers
include:
- Why Canada鈥檚 refugee system is not an effective conduit for terrorists
- Why the so-called Safe-Third Country Agreement with the United States should be abolished
- Why NGOs play a crucial role in protecting human rights
- Why the Singh decision is a historic breakthrough
- Why refugees have a better chance of acceptance in countries that embrace multiculturalism
The talk is being hosted by Montreal City Mission in collaboration with the 9I制作厂免费 School of Social Work.
