Luxuries of the Literary Mind: Readings of Commodity and Privilege

The English Department鈥檚 Seventeenth Annual Graduate Conference on Language and Literature will take place March 4th-6th at Thomson House on 9I制作厂免费 Campus. The conference, organized by the English Graduate Student鈥檚 Association, offers MA and PhD students from 9I制作厂免费, as well as other institutions internationally, the opportunity to share their research in a dynamic and supportive environment. This year鈥檚 conference features two additional panels to provide 9I制作厂免费 English undergraduates with an opportunity to share their work in a graduate-level setting.

With a strong interdisciplinary focus, the Call for Papers has attracted submissions interpreting privilege in a variety of ways, including literary, anthropological, historical, philosophical, and sociological examinations of class and status. Over 40 papers will be presented at the conference, contributing to collective understandings of aesthetic creation, education, and the nature of social relationships and interactions with culture, class, and commodity.

We are honoured to feature two addresses by invited speakers. Our Keynote Address, on the topic of luxury will be given Saturday evening by Professor George Toles of the University of Manitoba. Our own Professor Allan Hepburn will present the second annual Faculty Address on clutter and hoarding, and objects as artefacts on Friday evening.

We invite all members of the 9I制作厂免费 community, as well as those from the wider community of Montreal, to join us for all or part of this conference. Please email Amanda Clarke (amanda.clarke [at] mail.mcgill.ca) or Marc Ducusin (marc.ducusin [at] mail.mcgill.ca) if you have any further questions.
