Homecoming - Classes Without Quizzes 2D "Lost and Found: How We Learned About Remembering"
The 鈥淢ontreal procedure,鈥 the surgical approach Wilder Penfield
developed in the 1940s for treating epileptic seizures, left two
early patients with unexpected memory deficits. However, caring for
these patients led to major discoveries about the nature of
remembering. Working with HM, a legendary severe amnesiac
post-operative patient of American neurosurgeon William Scoville,
Dr. Brenda Milner was the first to uncover evidence of multiple
memory systems 鈥 a discovery that dramatically changed our
comprehension of memory. Dr. Milner will discuss how we came to a
better understanding of the way we remember and which questions
remain unanswered.
Brenda Milner, PhD鈥52, DSc鈥91, is the Dorothy J. Killam Professor
at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital. Trained at

Penfield鈥檚 group to study cognitive function in patients undergoing
neurosurgery. After more than 50 years in the field, Dr. Milneris
recognized worldwide as a pioneer in cognitive neuroscience for her
fundamental discoveries on memory and lateralization of function in
the brain. She is the recipient of numerous prestigious scientific
prizes and more than 20 honorary degrees.
