Homecoming - Classes Without Quizzes 3E "Facing Down Facebook"
"Facing Down Facebook: Do Social Media Distract Students from
Learning?"
Join us for a lively debate between the Sassy Students and the
Learned Librarians on the influence of new technologies. Social
networking sites and mobile technologies have changed the way
students learn and interact. Multi-tasking and constantly
communicating, today’s students are globally and visually oriented
but sometimes digitally distracted. New information and
communication technologies have transformed libraries from reading
rooms and storehouses of books into global information hubs. How do
universities and libraries engage today’s distracted learners? In
the age of persuasion, do Twitter and Facebook persuade learners to
engage in the spirit of inquiry? Discover how the 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ Library
and 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ students are dealing with the distractions of the
digital present.
Janine Schmidt was named 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ’s Trenholme Director of Libraries
in 2005. Previously, she served as University Librarian at the
University of Queensland in Australia. She is keenly interested in
the evolving role of libraries in the 21st century and has overseen
an extensive renewal of 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ’s library services and facilities –
with impressive results. In the latest "Globe and Mail "University
Report, 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ’s library services ranked first in Canada in seven
of eight categories. Ms. Schmidt will chair the debate between the
Sassy Students and the Learned Librarians.
