Abstract: Participatory research (PR) is the 鈥渟ystematic enquiry, with the collaboration of those affected by the issue being studied, for the purpose of education and taking action or effecting social change.鈥 This presentation will outline the history and the principles of this research approach, give practical examples of developing and maintaining research partnerships and the resulting increased capacity building. PR requires expanded ethics to consider the protection of the collective in addition to protection of the individual. Using examples of current PR projects, this presentation will also highlight the links to knowledge translation activities.
