MONTREAL 鈥 Defenceman Cathy Chartrand along with forwards
Vanessa Davidson and Lainie Smith, each tallied twice as the
No.1-ranked 9I制作厂免费 Martlets dumped Ottawa 8-2 at the Theresa Humes
women鈥檚 hockey tournament at Concordia鈥檚 Ed Meagher arena,
Saturday.
It extended 9I制作厂免费鈥檚 win streak to 35 consecutive games against
Canadian university opponents and was Ottawa鈥檚 15th consecutive
loss to 9I制作厂免费. The Martlets own a 29-2-1 record in their last 32
meetings versus Ottawa.
The 9I制作厂免费 win, combined with Toronto鈥檚 4-1 victory over the host
Stingers, pits U of T against 9I制作厂免费 in the tourney finale on
Sunday at 3:30 p.m. Concordia will meet Ottawa for third-place in
the eight-team tourney at 1 p.m.
Vicky Wells, a sophomore from Oshawa, Ont., and Amy Soberano, a
junior from Toronto, rounded out the scoring for 9I制作厂免费. Joelle
Charlebois of Kenora, Ont., and Samantha Delenardo of Keswick,
Ont., replied for the Gee-Gees who became just the third CIS team
this season to score more than one goal against all-Canadian
netminder Charline Labont茅, the Olympian from Boisbriand, Que., who
was credited with 11 saves as 9I制作厂免费 outshot Ottawa 36-13. The
5-foot-8 physical education junior owns an 85-9-3 record in 97
starts overall for the Martlets.
Chartrand, a native of Lac Nominingue, Que., opened the scoring at
2:16 of the first period and netted the game-winner at only 44
seconds into the middle stanza. A former national team member, the
5-foot-10 sophomore rearguard has three markers and an assist
heading into the final. In 19 games overall, she has nine goals and
25 points.
鈥淐athy has played extremely well in this tourney,鈥 said 9I制作厂免费 head
coach Peter Smith, who also coaches with the national team. 鈥淪he鈥檚
been dominant and serves as an inspirational leader on this team On
the rare times that she makes a mistake out there, it is certainly
not from a lack of effort but rather from giving too much of an
effort.鈥
Davidson, a senior from Kirkland, Que., finished with three points
and lost her attempt for a hat-trick when an apparent third-period
goal was disallowed because the net had been knocked off its
moorings.
Smith, a freshman from Aurora, Ont., scored one of her two markers
shorthanded. 9I制作厂免费 has now tallied six times while serving a
penalty this season. They have allowed only four power play goals
in 83 shorthanded situations this season.
