CIS Men's Hockey Top 10 (#9): Redmen remain fifth in national rankings

OTTAWA (CIS) - The reigning University Cup champion New Brunswick Varsity Reds top the CIS men's hockey rankings for the ninth time in as many media polls this year.

UNB was a unanimous choice at No. 1 for the eighth straight week thanks to 16 first-place votes in the first Top 10 of 2010.
听
The V-Reds improved to 17-0 in conference play over the past weekend with a 4-3 win over cross-town rival St. Thomas and a 5-3 defeat of UPEI. They remain on pace to improve on their AUS-record 26-1-1 mark from 2007-08 but face one of their toughest two-game sets of the campaign this week as they visit No. 7 Saint Mary's (10-3-4) on Friday and No. 4 Acadia (12-3-1) on Saturday.

UNB, which captured the Pete Kelly Cup title over the holidays with wins over Toronto and Moncton, shows a remarkable 27-0 overall mark against university competition in 2009-2010 including a 24-0 record versus CIS rivals and 3-0 against NCAA teams. The V-Reds' lone loss of the season was a 4-2 defeat at the hands of the AHL's Portland Pirates back on September 30.

Following UNB in this week's media poll are No. 2 Alberta (16-1-1), No. 3 Western Ontario (16-2-0), Acadia, No. 5 9I制作厂免费 (14-2-0) and No. 6 UQTR (14-2-1), who all remain in the spot they held in the final rankings of the fall semester on December 8.

Saint Mary's is up one position, Manitoba (10-4-2) drops one to No. 8, Wilfrid Laurier (13-4-2) stays put at No. 9, and previously unranked Saskatchewan (9-6-1) earns the last available Top 10 spot.

The Canada West-leading Golden Bears are second in the nation for the ninth straight week after they resumed conference play last weekend with a two-game sweep of Calgary, 6-3 and 4-3 in overtime. Over the holiday break, Alberta swept an epic two-match series in Edmonton against No. 5 9I制作厂免费, 5-4 and 6-5 in OT.

The OUA West-leading Mustangs, CIS finalists a year ago, remain at No. 3 for the fourth week in a row after they resumed the regular season with a sweep of archrival Lakehead, 7-2 and 8-3. Western is riding a 14-game win streak in conference play but went 0-2 over the break, losing 6-4 to Brock and 8-5 to Guelph at Brock's RBC Steel Blade Tournament.
