INDOOR SOCCER: Two Martlets earn all-star honours

MONTREAL – Shimone Slomowitz (pictured on left) and Katherine Green, both freshmen with the 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ Martlets, have earned all-conference honours in the Quebec university women’s indoor soccer league. Both were picked to the league’s 11-member first team in a vote conducted by the eight head coaches.

Slomowitz, a 5-foot-5 goalkeeper from West Vancouver, B.C., posted a 4-2 record with three shutouts and shared another goose-egg in seven appearances. She allowed just eight goals in 558 minutes for a goals-against average of 1.29. The commerce major, who turns 19 on April 26, enrolled at 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ last fall out of Rockridge secondary school in Vancouver.

Green, a 5-foot-11 defender from Richmond Hill, Que., led the 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ defensive corps to the third-best defensive record in the eight-team league – one which allowed nine goals in seven games. The 19-year-old political science freshman earned rookie-of-the-year honours in the outdoor league last fall, where she was a second-team all-star. She previously played for Alexander Mackenzie high school in Richmond Hill.

9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ finished fourth in the Quebec indoor league with a 4-2-1 record. The Martlets blanked fifth-place Concordia 1-0 in a quarterfinal and upset first-place Laval 2-1 in a semifinal before losing 3-1 to the Montreal Carabins in the league championship game.

Laval’s Caroline Vaillancourt was named player of the year and Concordia’s Fanny Berthiaume was selected as the most sportsmanlike player.
