MONTREAL -- V茅ronique Maranda and Eva Thouvenot-H茅bert scored as the No.1-ranked Montreal Carabins toppled eighth-seeded 9I制作厂免费 2-1 to capture the Quebec university women's soccer title, Sunday, and earned a berth at the CIS championship tournament in Toronto, Nov. 12-15.

The Carabins, coached by 9I制作厂免费 graduate Kevin McConnell, who played on the last Redmen championship team in 1997, had a 10-5 edge in shots and a 5-2 margin in corner kicks.

听

Montreal opened the scoring when M茅lynda Couture was knocked down in the box in the 13th minute and Maranda, a former member of the national team, connected on a penalty kick, firing a rocket into the right corner past 9I制作厂免费 'keeper Anne-Catherine Huot of Quebec City.

听

They made it 2-0 in the 63rd minute when Thouvenot-H茅bert took advantage of a feeble pass from a 9I制作厂免费 defender to Huot, outraced the netminder and scored from a sharp angle into the vacated net.

听

Claire Hooper, a sophomore from London, Ont., gave the Martlets some hop in the 74th minute, when she took a pass from defender Carolyn Bell of West Vancouver, B.C., and deked Carabins goalie Martine Julien.

听

"We matched them for 90 minutes but made two mental errors and that was the difference against a talented team with tons of experience," said Marc Mounicot, head coach of the Martlets.

听

"We stuck to the game plan, played an organized style and were well prepared on set plays. We could have broken down after the second goal but showed a lot of pride coming back to score and had Montreal on their heels over the final 15 minutes," he added.

听

"This team has come a long way but we are young and have a solid foundation and will have an opportunity to shine in the near future. A match like this will pay benefits down the road."

听

The 9I制作厂免费 backline was hindered by injuries and fever to all-star defenders Katherine Green and Carolyn Bell. Green left the game in the 64th minute.

It marked the final university contest for three 9I制作厂免费 players -- Huot, Cristina Di Caprio and Elizabeth Williams, each of whom had a very strong outing.

"It's a tough loss but we'll bounce back," said Mounicot. "I'm more disappointed by the fact that our conference will only have one representative at the CIS championships when both finalists should be there (like on the men's side)."
