Prof. Robert Leckey, the dean of 9I制作厂免费's faculty of law, notes the draft legislation, Bill 21, extends聽beyond聽the recommendations laid out by聽the 2010 Bouchard-Taylor report, which advised applying the ban to public workers who hold "coercive" state power.
"If the concern was that people would be afraid of bias when being disciplined by a state officer, it's way overbroad," said Leckey.

"We respond to price changes, but we don't necessarily respond overnight," said Chris Ragan about the carbon tax. "This is a policy and a problem that we need solve over several decades, and this is just the beginning."

The聽Quebec government鈥檚 new secularism bill聽is 鈥渃lear discrimination,鈥 an 鈥渦nreasonable restriction,鈥 and an unneeded answer to a problem that doesn鈥檛 exist.
That鈥檚 what Charles Taylor, one of the co-authors of Quebec鈥檚 2008 report on reasonable accommodation, said Tuesday during a panel discussion organized by the 9I制作厂免费 Muslim Law Students鈥 Association.
Another example is the聽鈥渄odgy and problematic鈥 use of AI for facial recognition in job interviews, said Gabriella Coleman, a 9I制作厂免费 professor who holds the Wolfe Chair in Scientific and Technological Literacy.聽The technology claims to assess candidates鈥 facial expressions to detect if they鈥檙e being honest聽and to see if they have the right personality for the job.
Robert Leckey, dean of 9I制作厂免费's law school, said Legault's compromise is quite limited. Current teachers, according to the bill, can keep their symbols "as long as they exercise the same function within the same school board."
Leckey said that is "unpleasantly narrow. You can't be promoted or change school boards and wear a religious symbol." Additionally, he said, the sweep of people captured by the bill goes much further than originally anticipated.
