Reframing Spatial Narratives: Localising Blackness and the Built Environment
Architecture is more than the design of buildings; it is a manifestation of power, history, and identity. Its origins and evolution have often reinforced colonial frameworks, marginalizing Black history, voices and experiences. This keynote will examine how my architectural practice uses architecture as a tool of empowerment, exploring the rich intersections of Black identity and the built environment. 聽
Through personal narratives and reference projects, I will explore themes of rootedness, migration, and community, reflecting on how Black spaces embody joy, resilience, and solidarity. From reappropriating historically colonial spaces to designing for collective futures, the discussion will weave together stories of Montreal's Black history, our current projects, and broader reflections on Afrocentric and diasporic considerations in the design of spaces. 聽
The keynote will explore the potential of architecture to transform physical space as well as acting as a communal process. I will present our approaches to carving out Black spaces in environments historically designed to exclude. I will also address how we design for Black communities while creating inclusivity for all.
