Attackers, scammers, marketers: these days they’re all taking advantage of AI to generate polished, typo-free content. Figuring out if an email is legitimate has definitely become more challenging. But when you access your 9I email through Microsoft Outlook, you benefit from several extra features that help protect you from phishing.

Keep an eye out for: phishing safety tips

Microsoft adds these tips at the top of each unexpected or suspicious email coming from outside 9I. They act as a clue to help you determine if an email should be trusted. We know may be easy to miss, so it’s a good habit to practice spotting them.

What’s the most common safety tip you’ll see?
"You don't often get email from <email address>. Learn why this is important."

You'll see it when:

  • Anyone contacts you for the first time. This could be a legitimate contact, a marketer, spam, or phishing.
  • Someone emails you rarely. For example, a fellow researcher from another institution only emails you once or twice a year.
