鈥淪tamp collecting dispels boredom, enlarges our vision, broadens our knowledge, and makes us better citizens and in innumerable ways enriches our lives.鈥 - Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Will there be any new stamps 50 years from now? Will there be any stamp collectors? As technology and social media radically transform the means of communication in our increasingly digitized world, national post offices struggle to remain relevant by modifying their traditional functions. Worldwide, the use of stamps has plummeted. Stamps are doomed to be marginalized, and yet, for over a century and a half, millions of stamps ensured that through war and peace the world stayed in contact through a universal postal system. Over the millennia 鈥渟nail mail鈥 was carried by man, horseback, coaches, railroads, ships, hot air balloons, airplanes - and even 鈥減igeon post鈥- in some cases millennia before the advent of heavier than air flight. No matter what the content of the letters or parcels, the stamps contained messages of their own 鈥 historical, political, military, technical, aesthetic, cultural, and even humorous 鈥 to the delight of countless collectors. One of the most common themes among many was natural history. It all started with the 1851 Canadian Beaver, the first stamp in the British Empire issued without a portrait of Queen Victoria: since then there have been tens of thousands of stamps bearing wildlife images.

EVERY STAMP A STORY brings together more than 200 natural history stamps from over 135 countries from the mid-19th century to the present. Their stories are astonishing, surprising, fascinating and often unexpected. They were selected from the more than 50,000 in the David Lank Collection, the largest such philatelic resource of any university, which is housed in 9I制作厂免费鈥檚 Rare Books and Special Collections. The exhibition gratefully acknowledges the support of the Friends of the 9I制作厂免费 Library who have included it in their annual public program designed to foster knowledge and support for the 9I制作厂免费 library system by students, alumni and the public at large.

Parmi des th茅matiques les plus populaires 鈥 parmi toute une gamme 鈥 茅taient l鈥檋istoire naturelle.
