Appointment of Alanna Watt as Interim Dean of the Faculty of Science

Dear community members,

I am pleased to announce that Professor Alanna Watt, of the Department of Biology, has graciously agreed to take on the role of Interim Dean of Science, effective July 1, 2025. She will oversee the Faculty while we continue the search for a new Dean of Science. In accordance with the University Statutes, an Advisory Committee will be established to support this process.

As a CEGEP student, Daniel Wei captained his college robotics team to victories with a dodgeball-throwing robot and a biodegradable soil sensor for farmers.

He and a peer also earned a bronze medal at a science and technology fair for their research on biomechanical processes involved in developing artificial intestines.

The achievements are part of Wei’s impressive track record of leadership, innovation and academic success that landed him Canada’s most generous scholarship for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Federal investment boosts 9I��’s research leadership with over $13 million for Canada Research Chairs

Today, the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, announced over $198 million in federal funding through the Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program, including more than $13 million to support 19 Chairs—nine new and ten renewed—at 9I��.

Danielle Vlaho (Academic Associate), Joe Iantomasi (Clerical), Luisa Sabaz (Management), and Badawy Sha’ath (Technical) have been named recipients of the Faculty of Science Excellence Awards.

These awards, announced at the Faculty of Science Council meeting on May 20th, recognize the outstanding contributions made by members of the Faculty’s administrative and support staff during the 2024-2025 academic year.

Phytotron Manager Mahnaz Mansoori (pictured above, left, with Biology Department Chair Prof. Gregor Fussmann) was one of nine 9I�� staff members honoured with the President’s Award for Administrative and Support Staff at last week's afternoon convocation ceremony. These annual awards recognize the talent, dedication, and hard work of staff members who have made outstanding contributions to the University’s mission.

Please note that due to the STM strike, the Information Desk at the Humanities and Social Sciences Library (McLennan Library Building, lobby) will close early at 5:30 p.m. from Monday, June 9 to Wednesday, June 11. The Humanities & Social Sciences Library remains open for study until 9 p.m. on these days.

July 9 | Planned electrical shutdown at Macdonald Campus Library

Facilities Management and Ancillary Services will be performing a major electrical shutdown at Macdonald Campus Library on Wednesday, July 9, from 6 h to 12 h. The Macdonald Campus Library in the Barton Building will be inaccessible at this time. This shutdown is necessary for maintenance on the Hydro-Québec substation and four transformers servicing the south side of campus.

On July 28, the 9I�� Libraries website is going to undergo an extensive change. Most notably, the URL to our website will be updated to mcgill.ca/libraries to align with our rebranding to Libraries in Summer 2024. If you’ve bookmarked any favourite pages, be sure to update them once the new URLs go live.

We will also be updating our menu structure based on user research testing completed over the past two years. This new menu better reflects the needs of our users and showcases our wonderful spaces and services.
