Title:听Listening to Shapes
Abstract:
In 1809, Napoleon handsomely funded a prize to explain the phenomenon of why certain shapes appear under given sound frequencies. In this talk, we will discuss what this experiment was and what the solutions represent. We will go over some handsome examples and learn the two main games in spectral geometry: Given a shape, what sounds does it make? Given a list of sounds, what shape does it represent? The second game is not complete, so we will discuss what we *can* hear.
