November 30, 2022 | Canada finally released its long-awaited Indo-Pacific Strategy on Sunday. This new policy framework is vital for a variety of actors, both inside and outside the government.
After some false starts, Canada thankfully has a strategy for the Indo-Pacific. But in many respects, that was the easy part says Professor Vincent Rigby and Professor Jennifer Welsh. Where the next step, implementation, will be complex and detailed.听Moreover, though we now have a strategic framework for one global region, the same cannot be said for other parts of the world. Professors Vincent Rigby and Jennifer Welsh question how the Indo-Pacific strategy will be balanced against foreign policy priorities in Europe, Africa and Latin America. They state that Canada still lacks a comprehensive foreign-policy statement, a notable shortcoming for a G7 country facing a challenging world.
