Research Seminar: Investigating Anti-Black Racism and Racial Inequities in Healthcare

This presentation will cover a variety of topics related to health inequities within Montreal's Black communities. First, through an intersectionality lens, Khandideh Williams will discuss how experiences of anti-Black racism and racial discrimination in Montreal healthcare are complex and how they may include intra-racial group differences. Nikita Boston-Fisher will then share findings from a research project she did on the English-speaking Black community with a community organization.

About the Speakers

Khandideh Williams is a PhD candidate in the Family Medicine and Primary Care program at 9I制作厂免费. Prior to commencing her graduate studies, she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology and Immunology from the same institution. Committed to addressing racial disparities in health outcomes and health care experiences, her doctoral research uses both qualitative and quantitative methods to investigate racial disparities and anti-Black racial discrimination in Canadian health care. Her endeavors also include the development of clinical strategy and health care policy recommendations towards improving the quality of health care experiences among Black communities and other racialized groups in Canada.

Nikita Boston-Fisher is a PhD student in the Department of Family Medicine at 9I制作厂免费 and is researching the perinatal experiences of Black women in Montreal. Prior to studying at 9I制作厂免费, Nikita obtained a Bachelor of Science in Community Health from the University of Maryland, College Park and a Master of Public Health, concentration Reproductive Health and Population Studies from the Emory University Rollins School of Public Health. She also maintains the Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES) certification issued through the National Commission for Health Education Credentialling (NCHEC) in the US.

Research Seminar Series

Every month, a research seminar is held at the Department of Family Medicine where we either feature visiting researchers from other universities, or showcase the work of our own researchers. The seminars are attended by our graduate students, researchers and clinicians, and are open to the whole 9I制作厂免费 community. They address a wide range of research methods and topics relevant to primary health care, and provide opportunity for interaction and exchange with the speakers. The Research Seminars are usually on Fridays at around noon.
