Abstract
Leadership in health professions education is often narrowly framed around cognitive skills and competencies, yet effective leadership extends beyond what individuals know to who they are. Character-based leadership integrates moral and dispositional qualities into leadership education, fostering the development of leaders who can navigate complexity with integrity, resilience, and purpose. This presentation will explore the state of the art in character education within health professions education, drawing on emerging research and insights from an ongoing program of study on character-based leadership in medicine. Key findings from a systematic review of leadership training in medical education will highlight existing gaps and limitations, while qualitative research will provide deeper perspectives on how character shapes leadership effectiveness in healthcare settings. This session will offer both practical insights and scholarly perspectives on the role of character in health professions leadership. It will examine key challenges, consider new approaches to leadership development, and invite reflection on the opportunities and complexities of integrating character education into healthcare training and practice.
