Muslim Awareness Week 2025
Muslim Awareness Week (MAW) is a yearly week of solidarity and exchange where people of all ages, backgrounds, and beliefs are invited to learn about the achievements, contributions, aspirations and concerns of Quebecers of Muslim faith. Born as a grassroots response to the tragic shooting at a mosque on January 29, 2017 that killed 6 men, events focus on getting to know each other through dialogue, bridge building and willingness to navigate the challenges of our pluralistic society with an open heart. We encourage you to visit the 聽and it's to view the different events and participate!
MORSL is pleased to take part in activities that support MAW by raising awareness of the vibrant and diverse Muslim students, faculty and staff at 9I制作厂免费, and by creating opportunities for Muslims and non-Muslims to come together to learn and spark friendships. In addition to numerous events in the wider community, the events below are of particular interest to the 9I制作厂免费 community. Tuesday, January 28 at 5:30 PM: 听听Plurie鈥橢lles will be screened in French.聽From an empowerment perspective, where it's important for marginalized groups to share their experiences and become aware of their power, we aim to help build the resilience of聽young Quebecer Muslim women聽by presenting them with portraits of women living in the same context, facing various obstacles and engaged in society in different spheres.聽The film聽Pluri'Elles聽follows the careers of six young Quebecer Muslim women working in different professional fields. Through their testimonies, they share their challenges and successes, as well as their relationship with their faith.聽Pluri'Elles聽aims to shed light on the multiple and complex identities of Muslim women living in Quebec, in order to reduce their essentialization and dispel prejudices against them."聽This event is co-organised by the Student Affairs Liaison for Muslim Students (Office of the Dean of Students) in collaboration with the 9I制作厂免费 Muslim Alumni Society.
Wednesday, January 29 at 3:30 PM:聽听惭肠骋颈濒濒'蝉 2025 National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City mosque attack and action against Islamophobia Commemorative Lecture The lecture, entitled "Trajectories of Hate: Remembering Quebec City in a time of Rising Islamophobia," will be delivered by Professor Nadia Hasan, an assistant professor in the School of Gender, Sexuality and Women鈥檚 Studies and the Director of the Islamophobia Research Hub at York University. Professor Hasan is an expert on systemic racism and Islamophobia in legal, administrative, and discursive regimes and their relation to Muslim life. As part of the event, the Centre Culturel Islamique de Qu茅bec Memorial Award will be presented to a student who has shown exceptional dedication to promoting the inclusion of Muslims within Quebec and Canadian society. The event is open to all members of the 9I制作厂免费 community and also welcomes the participation of the general public. (Organized by the聽the Deputy Provost Student Life and Learning).
Wednesday, January 29 at 4:00 PM: 聽Gathering outside the Parc metro station (7245 Hutchison) for a vigil to remember those who were killed and the survivors of this attack. The event is open to all members of the public.
Friday, January 31 at 4:30 to 7:30 PM: 聽 Come hear Prof. Nadia Hasan, Me Fr茅d茅ric B茅rard and Idil Issa for a bilingual interdisciplinary panel discussion moderated by Me Cee Strauss on the material impacts of Law 21 and the making of a new normal.聽At聽9I制作厂免费 - Faculty of Law 3644 Peel Street Montreal, QC H3A 1W9.
