Physicist, string theorist and best-selling author to make two presentations
The scientific lecture "The State of String Theory" will now be on MONDAY, NOVEMBER 21, at 3:00 pm in Room M1, Strathcona Anatomy and Dentistry Building, followed by a public lecture called "Einstein's Dream: An Elegant Universe" at 7:00 pm in the LEACOCK BUILDING, ROOM 132, 855 SHERBROOKE STREET WEST.
Greene will explain the fascinating science behind string theory, a concept which combines quantum mechanics with general relativity. His lectures take audiences on a journey into the extra time and space dimensions required by string theory, and will explain their physical, mathematical and observational consequences.
Well known for popularizing complex physics concepts, Greene has written two books, The Elegant Universe and The Fabric of the Cosmos, which have spent weeks on the New York Times best-seller list, sold millions of copies worldwide and made him a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in nonfiction. His television appearances include Charlie Rose, CNN, Nightline, Late Night with David Letterman and as host of the Emmy Award-winning NOVA special "Elegant Universe." He is currently working with Quebec producer-director Robert Lepage to develop his "Strings and Strings" collaboration with the Emerson Quartet for a series of performances at the Lincoln Center in 2008.
The Anna I. McPherson Lecture Series was established in 1983 to honour the Physics department's first female professor and a generous benefactor. The series aims to promote science to the general public by presenting world-famous scientists.
