From medicine to music — 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ receives research boost
Fifteen new 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ professors learned today they were successful in securing funding for their research – their applications received the nod from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI). This represents a success rate in the CFI's New Opportunities program of 88 percent. Research projects will study everything from voice recognition to biodiversity to plankton and the nutrition of chickens.
"We are obviously very happy with these results," said Jacques Hurtubise, Interim Vice-Principal (Research). "With almost $7 million awarded, this has been a great year for 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ in terms of the New Opportunities program. We are supporting the next generation of world-renowned scientists. This funding is a welcome contribution to this effort – and a tribute to the excellence of our young researchers."
Of the funded projects (complete list below) five are from the Faculty of Science, two from Medicine, two from Engineering, two from Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, two from Dentistry, one from Music and one from Education.
Kinesiology professor Julie Côté is one of the new 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ researchers to receive New Opportunities funding. She will study how people coordinate repetitive movements of their arms. She will apply these findings to injury prevention in the workplace. Typical examples of repetitive movement injuries include carpal tunnel syndrome and injuries of the shoulder.
Dentistry professor Simon Tran also received a New Opportunities grant. He plans to study the use of stem cells for tooth or salivary gland regeneration. This research may lead to clinically useful therapies for individuals with Sjogren's syndrome (loss of saliva glands) or who receive radiation therapy to the head and neck.
"The aim is to offer these patients effective treatment through the regeneration or implantation of artificial glands using stem cells that are drawn from their own tissues," Tran said.
The CFI New Opportunities program is a federal initiative with funding matched by Recherche Québec. Professors must apply within 18 months of their first appointment at an eligible Canadian university. Research projects are assessed based on the quality of research and need for infrastructure, the contribution to strengthening the capacity for innovation, and the potential benefits to Canada.
