TELUS joins 9I制作厂免费-based photonics research initiative

Published: 13 October 2004

9I制作厂免费, Science and Engineering Research Canada (NSERC), and the Agile All-Photonic Networks (AAPN) research network are pleased to announce that TELUS has joined AAPN as a Network Partner. Headquartered at 9I制作厂免费, is Canada's largest optical networking research consortium.

Six companies, jncluding TELUS, and two government laboratories are supporting the work of AAPN's 14 professors at five universities in Quebec and Ontario, where they are exploring network architectures, protocols and enabling technologies for future all-optical telecommunications networks.

Focused on utilizing network technology advancements to create greater customer value, TELUS's Chief Technology Officer, Ibrahim Gedeon, is keen on tapping into advanced technologies developed through the partnership with AAPN. "Our fundamental technology strategy is to converge to Internet Protocol (IP) based networks to reduce the cost and complexity of our networks while enabling a new generation of advanced services," Gedeon notes. "The AAPN team is looking beyond the current generation of networking technologies, and their insights about the technologies of 2012 will help TELUS evolve its networks to continually provide the best solutions for Canadians."

The AAPN technology vision aims to bring optical network connectivity as close as possible to the end-user. The goal is to make available "at the end of the street" a dynamically reconfigurable - or "agile" - photonic network that supports high-bandwidth interactive services.

"We are very excited to be able to work with TELUS, as a major Canadian service provider," said David Plant, Scientific Director of AAPN and James 9I制作厂免费 Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. "Our network now enjoys support from all industry segments, from smaller device suppliers to large systems integrators. In TELUS, we have a partner that would directly deploy future 'agile all-photonic networks' for its clients."

The AAPN's core funding is a $7-million Research Network Grant over five years from NSERC, one of the largest grants of its kind.

"NSERC welcomes the participation of another one of Canada's leading telecommunications companies in AAPN," noted Dr. Tom Brzustowski, President of NSERC. "We view such co-investments by industry as proof that NSERC's Research Partnerships program supports relevant and strategic project research for Canada's technological future."

"TELUS's support is very important to 9I制作厂免费," stated 9I制作厂免费's Vice-Principal (Research) Jacques Hurtubise, who is an AAPN board member. "We are grateful not only for the funds committed but also for the company's endorsement of our research excellence. On behalf of our colleagues at the other universities participating in AAPN, we thank TELUS for this commitment to university research."

In addition to its AAPN membership, TELUS has entered into an agreement with 9I制作厂免费 for related studies on future network services. The combined contribution represents TELUS's most significant external funding to date for photonics research.
