Abstract:ÌýMetacommunity theory aims at defining the mechanisms underlying species assemblages observed in nature across a region composed of multiple local environments. In and by itself, this requires to carefully account for theory to gather new ecological insights and thus allow researchers to validate or dismiss previously proposed theoretical ideas. Yet, most studies focusing on metacommunities are either theoretical and propose little to no ways to validate new development with data, or focus on empirical finding and only make conceptual references to the theory. In my talk, I will discuss ways to make stronger links between theory and data through the development of mathematical and statistical tools specifically designed to approach metacommunity questions using commonly gathered ecological data.
