The Centre for interdisciplinary research on Montr茅al (CIRM) invites applications for a Master's Fellowship for the year 2025-2026.

CIRM brings together researchers whose interests are connected to Montr茅al. Its mission is: 1)听to stimulate emerging research in Montr茅al studies and to unite the research being conducted within various disciplines and universities; 2)听to develop partnerships, sets of themes, and fundamental and applied research projects on the economic, social, cultural and governmental spheres of Montr茅al.

Fellowship value and duration

  • Master's听Fellowship in Montr茅al Studies: $18,500$
  • Research budget: $1,500$听[1]

  • The duration of the fellowship is maximum 12 months听- depending on the public health context and authorization by the Direction de sant茅 publique, the fellowship recipient will have the option of having a workspace in the CIRM offices, located at 680 Sherbrooke Street West, 8th floor, in Montr茅al.听

Conditions

  1. The candidates must:
    • be either Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or have the appropriate visa;
    • be enrolled full-time in a master's-level program at a Qu茅bec university听[2];
    • be enrolled in a master's program with thesis[3];
    • be supervised by a regular or associate CIRM member.
  2. The submitted projects must deal in whole or in part (comparative research is accepted) with Montr茅al and intersect with at least one of CIRM鈥檚 six research-action axes, and they must address the broad theme of neighbourhoods or neighbourhood life;
  3. Fellowship recipients are expected to participate in CIRM鈥檚 work during the duration of the award. The terms of this participation can be discussed with the Centre鈥檚 director听and coordinators.
  4. Candidates must have sufficient knowledge of the French language or be willing to take courses once in office through 9I制作厂免费鈥檚 French Language Centre.
  5. The accumulation of awards with those from large funding organizations, or others, is permitted.

Eligibility period

  • To be considered for the fellowship, students must have been enrolled full-time in a master's program at a Qu茅bec university since 2023, and plan to complete their program no later than 2026.

Selection and calendar

Fellowships are awarded by a jury composed of members of CIRM鈥檚 Executive Committee who have not endorsed an application.

  • Application deadline: March 10th, 2025 at 5 p.m. (Montr茅al time);
  • Evaluation of applications and, if applicable, interviews with finalists: between March 10th and March 28th,听2025;
  • Results announcement:听March 31st, 2025.

Content of the application

  • Letter of intent, in which are specified the applicant鈥檚 CIRM-affiliated supervisor, the home university, and the anticipated contribution to the work at CIRM;
  • Description of the research project (maximum 2 single-spaced pages);
  • Resume (university studies, publications, awards, relevant experiences and work);
  • Copy of transcripts (university studies only);
  • One听letter from the master's thesis supervisor and CIRM member confirming the research collaboration;
  • One letter听of recommendation (directly sent to pascal.brissette [at] mcgill.ca (CIRM鈥檚 Director), nik.luka [at] mcgill.ca (Associate Director) and stephan.gervais [at] mcgill.ca (Scientific Coordinator)听by those writing them).

Applications must be written in French or English and sent in electronic format, in a single PDF document, no later than March 10th, 2025 at 5 p.m. (Montr茅al time), to the Director (pascal.brissette [at] mcgill.ca), the Associate Director (nik.luka [at] mcgill.ca) and the CIRM Scientific Coordinator (stephan.gervais [at] mcgill.ca).

Evaluation criteria

  • Academic performance
  • Relevance of the research proposal with regard to CIRM鈥檚 mission, research-action axes and structuring projects;
  • Appeal of the anticipated contribution to CIRM鈥檚 work and activities;
  • Confirmed interest and ability in interdisciplinary and intersectoral work as well as teamwork;
  • Leadership and community engagement.

[2]听Students who intend to enroll in a master's program, but who are not already enrolled, are not eligible for the fellowship.

[3]听The definition here is the one used by the : 鈥淎s part of the master's research program, the awardee must be required to write a research thesis (essays, research reports, dissertations and articles not eligible). Professional master's programs are not eligible.鈥
