Composite parts in aviation are typically manufactured using thermoset resins which limit recycling possibilities at their end of life and thus increase life cycle emissions. My PhD project focuses on enabling circular design in aviation by integrating modern thermoplastic resins with recycled carbon fiber preforms to manufacture high-performance, recyclable composite parts. These thermoplastic resins, like the Arkema Elium, offer multiple routes of recycling as well as low processing temperatures and pressures, broadening manufacturing options to techniques like liquid composite molding. By characterizing the polymerization behavior of the thermoplastics as well as the processability of different recycled fiber preforms I aim to identify optimal manufacturing techniques and ensure aviation-grade performance.
