Online placement tests - Summer 2025

SUMMER 2025

REGISTRATION FOR THE SUMMER 2025 FRSL COURSE PLACEMENT INTERVIEW SESSIONS IS NOW OPEN.

The aim of the placement test is to assess your real level of French and to register you in a course according to your performance. It is the student's responsibility to do the test faithfully to the best of their knowledge. Please听don't听use any听external/online resources听(dictionary, francophone friends, internet, etc.). If you are misplaced for that reason, your spot in the course won't be guaranteed.

Step 1: Computerized test (at home)

All students (including complete beginners) wishing to take a French course are required to take an online placement test.听 All French courses given at the French Language Centre (FLC)听have limited enrollment and placement tests are mandatory for all students.

Firstly, you have to do the online placement test:听

When you write the test, read the instructions carefully.听If you skip them, you will not be able to go back.听All students are required to write a composition.听If听you have some French knowledge (even very little)听you have to write something.听The instructor won't attribute a course without knowing the level of writing.

NB. No need to take the online test听several times, your written online test is valid for 2 years unless meanwhile, you have taken other French courses.

Step 2: Individual Placement Interview

The placement interview sessions are strictly reserved for students who intend to register for an FRSL course.

To find out the dates of the next available interviews and to register for one of them, please first complete Step 1: the computerized placement test. At the end of the test, you will receive a confirmation email inviting you to register for the placement interview. Please check your inbox (and your spam folder).

If an interview session is no longer available while you try to register, it means that the session is full. If all the sessions are full, please wait for more dates.

The online virtual meeting room will be sent by email only to registered persons. Only duly registered persons will be admitted.

Total beginner students (according to the online placement test):

If you are a total beginner (according to the online placement test), you don't need to meet an evaluator. Once you have finished the online test, you might have to wait up to 1-1.5 weeks to register on Minerva. If you still cannot register after this period, contact flc [at] mcgill.ca.

If you are a graduate student and received permission to register for Beginners French (101 or 105), you do not need to meet an evaluator. Please follow the above-mentioned instructions for beginners.

All regular students who have some French knowledge or speak French (undergraduate, graduate, visiting and exchange students): You have to meet an evaluator for an interview.

If you have some French knowledge, you will have a short interview in order to evaluate your oral skills. Once you have finished the online test and the interview, you might have to wait up to 1 business day to register on Minerva. If you still cannot register after 1 business day, contact flc [at] mcgill.ca.

听If you want to take Health and Social Services courses, please follow the procedures on this page and contact Prof. Abi Mansour at dolly.abimansour [at] mcgill.ca to make an appointment for an interview.

听If you want to apply for a transfer of credits, please follow the procedures on this page and contact Prof. Liakina at natallia.liakina [at] mcgill.ca to make an appointment for an interview. Note that Prof. Liakina won't be able to deal with your transfer of credits during the regular interview sessions.

NB. Health and Social Services courses and transfer of credits students won't be received nor evaluated during the regular interview sessions.
