"My mobility experience in British Columbia marked my first hands-on involvement in farming, where I participated in the day-to-day operations and observed the full cycle of crop growth, particularly corn for dairy cows. I had the opportunity to work on both trial and commercial-scale farms, measuring nitrous oxide emissions and collecting samples of plants, soil, and roots. This experience allowed me to interact with farmers, learning directly from them. It has been an invaluable support to my project, as it provided me with real-life insights into farming practices that I can integrate into my research."

Philosophy

"I am so grateful to have had the chance to participate in Hong Kong University's Summer Research Programme. Due to the GMA, I was able to conduct audacious research regarding the relationship between Confucian influence and the inefficacy of liberal rhetoric in China through a post-pandemic lens. This led to my being awarded HKU's prestigious Presidential Scholarship, a fully-funded PhD offer. I made invaluable connections with an interdisciplinary cohort and found a wonderful academic community in Hong Kong."

A Rural Landscape in Honghe Hani.

"My mobility experience from May to September forms a crucial part of my MA thesis. Within this period, I conducted over 40 semi-structured interviews, 20 photovoice and 5 mental mapping exercises with Hmong rural-to-urban migrants in Kunming. During these social interactions I found their social-spatial experience in and beyond Kunming to be truly interesting. Therefore, I accepted the invitations from two of my interviewees to travel to Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture and Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture as well. Through these small trips I tried to gain a deeper insight on the rural landscape, alongside the highly urbanized landscape I was constantly exposed to in Kunming."

Natural Resource Science

"I undertook a research in forest management and livelihoods in communities around the Mole National Park, Ghana. This sought to assess the impact of some of the community-based natural resource management initiatives on forest-dependent communities around the park. This experience enriched my knowledge in forest management and deepened my understanding of the cultural, political and social influence in resource management. I gained a great sense of appreciation for the culture and women in each of the communities I visited and it was amazing seeing them go about their normal lives and opening up to me on how live in that area is like."

"My mobility experience involved collaborating with the Icelandic Orca Project in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland, where we studied how diet preferences influence toxic contaminant accumulation in killer whales. Despite delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, I finally joined the fieldwork, assisting in biopsy sampling and data collection. Being on the boat next to these magnificent whales was an awe-inspiring experience, providing me with firsthand observations of their behavior and interactions in their natural habitat. This hands-on experience, supported by the graduate mobility award and my PhD advisor, has been invaluable, providing deep insights and inspiration for my ongoing research and future endeavors in marine mammal ecology."

"The research conducted in Namibia this field season is integral to my PhD thesis project, which aims to investigate the potential influences of climate and tectonics on sedimentation style in a mixed carbonate and siliciclastic system. Over the course of six weeks, we collected several stratigraphic logs and gathered ash and carbonate samples for further analysis. This hands-on experience greatly enriched my geological understanding of the region and demonstrated the value of collaborative research. I am grateful for the support from the award and my co-supervisors, which made this opportunity possible."

A view of the city of Bern, very close to where I stayed in Fribourg. It is very easy to move around in Switzerland (public transport is great).
"During my stay at the University of Fribourg, I had the privilege of collaborating with Dr. Cristian Carmeli on a population-based mortality study. Our research aimed to assess the impact of the pandemic on chronic disease mortality in Switzerland by examining death data from the Federal Statistical Office. We compared traditional methods of assessing mortality, which consider only one disease as the cause of death (Underlying Cause of Death, UCOD), with a weighted multiple cause of death approach (MCOD). The UCOD approach often fails to capture the increasing multimorbidity and complex causation patterns seen in the population. This limitation is particularly pertinent during the COVID-19 pandemic, as WHO guidelines mandated that SARS-CoV-2 be listed as the UCOD if it appeared on the death certificate, even if it did not initiate the death process. As a result, the impact of the pandemic on deaths involving chronic diseases might be underestimated when using the UCOD approach. To address this, we conducted a time series analysis of all deaths in Switzerland from 2011 to 2022, focusing on chronic disease related deaths. We modeled pre-pandemic trends (2011-2019) to predict expected deaths had the pandemic not occurred, and then compared these predictions to听actual deaths to assess the pandemic's impact. Briefly, our findings revealed that during the pandemic (2020-2022), 60% of all deaths had a chronic disease as the underlying cause, while 90% had a chronic disease either as the underlying cause or among the concurrent causes. Different phases of the pandemic showed varying impacts on chronic disease deaths. The MCOD and UCOD approaches provided similar excess death estimates except for late 2020, when Switzerland experienced the highest excess all-cause mortality. I had the opportunity to present early results from this study at a #PopHealthLab scientific meeting in the middle of my stay. The feedback I received from colleagues was incredibly helpful and constructive, guiding further refinement of our analysis. Additionally, I attended the European Population Conference (EPC) in Edinburgh, where I presented preliminary results of our work. This conference was instrumental in expanding my professional network, as I had the opportunity to meet several fellow researchers and professors during various networking sessions. Currently, I am preparing a manuscript based on this research for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. This manuscript will also be included in my PhD dissertation, contributing significantly to my academic progress."

"This winter, I had the opportunity to join other graduate students in Trinidad for a collaborative project on the behaviour of wild Trinidadian guppies. In addition, I was able to research the effect of exploratory tendencies on gut content diversity of wild Trinidadian guppies, which represent a part of my thesis. This field trip was a fantastic experience, allowing me to observe my model system in its natural habitat and enjoy the tropical weather and culture of Trinidad. I am grateful for the support of the graduate mobility award, which funded part of my research, and I will always treasure the memories and lessons gained from this experience."

"I learned a proper sample collection technique from both manure and livestock-associated soil on dairy farms. I also learned methods of soil treatment for each type of analysis to be performed in my project, and I will apply these methods to samples collected in Canada. In addition, I learned the library preparation for 16S rRNA lull-length sequencing on Nanopore MinION as well as data analysis of the obtained results. The skillsets obtained in this trip will directly facilitate the successful completion of my doctoral project."
