What is the objective of the Academy?
To recognize members of the clinical faculty who are outstanding physicians to their patients and excellent role models for their colleagues and trainees.
Who may be nominated for membership?
Any physician who is a member of a clinical department of the School of Medicine and spends at least 50% of his or her time in clinical practice.
What are the criteria for nomination and selection?
Excellence in following domains:
- Clinical acumen and expertise – a ‘go-to clinician’: highly skilled clinician, innovative clinical methods, a scholarly approach to patient care. “If I faced a difficult clinical situation, I would seek this colleague’s guidance.”
- Trustworthiness and global competence – a ‘doctor’s doctor’: prioritizes a respectful care environment, compassionate, advocates for patients and the greater community. “If I or a family member required care, this is a physician to whom I would turn.”
- A person of integrity and honor – a masterly and humane professional, ethical presence, morally just and honest. “I would entrust my welfare to this physician.”
- A role model for colleagues and trainees: a ‘wise person’: a clinician with deep experience; a sought-after mentor and guide. “A physician who is widely admired and emulated.”
Teaching skills are not the primary criteria for this Award.
What is the process of nomination?
- Each clinical department will use its own internal process and may nominate up to a maximum number of nominees each year (see spreadsheet).
- Not more than 31 nominees shall be presented each year to a Faculty Selection Committee.
- Each dossier presented shall be accompanied by a letter of nomination from the Chair and not more than two letters of support from peers, trainees and/or patients.
- The Faculty Selection Committee shall select not more than 8 candidates from amongst the nominees.
How will the successful candidates be recognized?
- The individuals selected will enter the Academy of Exemplary Physicians
- Membership will be recognized with a certificate and lapel pin.
- An annual ceremony will be held to celebrate the Laureates.
- Members of the Academy may be invited to participate in a video interview and presented in an accessible podcast and archive.
