When he shared the good news, Dean Daniel Jutras underscored how, "for nearly twenty years, Genevi猫ve Saumier has outstandingly contributed to the intellectual and collegial life of both the Faculty and the University.

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Johanne Poirier has been named the inaugural holder of the Peter MacKell Chair in Federalism. Professor Poirier will join the Faculty of Law on August 1, 2015.

Johanne Poirier is a noted scholar of public law and constitutional law, with a unique expertise in federalism, developed over years of work in Belgium where she used her personal experience of the Canadian federal context in her study of local and European circumstances.

On September 11, during the International Palliative Care conference in Montreal, Professor Margaret Somerville received the 2014 Jean Echlin Award for Ethics in Palliative Care, sponsored by the deVeber Institute for Bioethics and Social Research.

The Institute wished to honour Professor Somerville鈥檚 career, stating that 鈥渟he has been a bold beacon of reason in both her academic work and the public square against legalizing euthanasia, arguing for better access to high quality palliative care, especially pain management in caring for dying people.鈥

The Spiegel Sohmer Tax Policy Colloquium has been made possible by a generous grant from the law firm Spiegel Sohmer, for the purpose of fostering an academic community in which learning and scholarship may flourish.

We are pleased to announce that Professor Hoi Kong has accepted to serve the Faculty as Associate Dean (Academic) for a two-year term starting September 1st, 2014.

As Dean Daniel Jutras indicated, 鈥淗oi has agreed to take on this important task as we begin a most important stage in our undergraduate program review and overhaul.聽 Hoi鈥檚 commitment to our students is undeniable (as attested by the John W. Durnford Award he received last year), and his creativity and rigor in thinking about pedagogy and curriculum will be precious over the course of the next two years.鈥

Professor Andrea Bjorkland, the L. Yves Fortier Chair in International Arbitration and International Commercial Law, was delighted to receive more than 80 submissions from scholars and junior practitioners affiliated with more than 50 institutions for the 2014 Nappert Prize in International Arbitration. Authors hailed from around the world, with every continent save Antarctica represented.聽
