My guest next Sunday on my radio show is Dr. David Gorski, surgical oncologist and champion of science-based medicine. The topic? What else? Quack cancer remedies. But we will also discuss legitimate treatments. You can catch the action at 3 PM Eastern time on CJAD 800 in Montreal or on the web. Just go to the CJAD website and click on" listen live."
New study sheds light on most common and deadly form of brain cancer

The 9I制作厂免费 Division of Cancer Epidemiology has recently launched the CATCH study to test the effectiveness of a Carrageenan-based gel in preventing the tranmission of HPV. Carrageenan is derived from red algae, and commonly used as a thickening agent in food products. It could represent an inexpensive method of prevention against the virus, whereas the vaccine and screening procedures are considerably more expensive.
The Government of Qu茅bec announced today a $10 million investment in the Personalized Medicine Partnership for Cancer (PMPC). This public-private partnership will be focused on establishing an integrated approach for the development and implementation of clinical biomarkers and other personalized healthcare solutions to improve the outcome and cost-efficiency of healthcare services provided to cancer patients in the province of Qu茅bec and abroad.
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), commonly known as lupus, is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system attacks healthy tissue such as the skin, joints, kidneys and the brain, leading to inflammation and lesions. The disease affects about 1 in 2000 Canadians, particularly women. Previous research has suggested that lupus patients have an increased risk of developing cancer, particularly lymphoma. 聽Lymphoma is a type of blood cancer that occurs when cells called lymphocytes, which usually help protect the body from infection and disease, begin growing and multiplying uncontrollably leading to tumor growth.
Researchers at 9I制作厂免费 have discovered that a key regulator of energy metabolism in cancer cells known as the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) may play a crucial role in restricting cancer cell growth. AMPK acts as a 鈥渇uel gauge鈥 in cells; AMPK is turned on when it senses changes in energy levels, and helps to change metabolism when energy levels are low, such as during exercise or when fasting. The researchers found that AMPK also regulates cancer cell metabolism and can restrict cancer cell growth.

A team of researchers at 9I制作厂免费 have discovered a molecular basis for the potential cancer preventive effects of vitamin D. The team, led by 9I制作厂免费 professors John White and David Goltzman, of the Faculty of Medicine鈥檚 Department of Physiology, discovered that the active form of vitamin D acts by several mechanisms to inhibit both the production and function of the protein cMYC. cMYC drives cell division and is active at elevated levels in more than half of all cancers. Their results are published in the latest edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
