Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to welcome Dr. Atif Jastaniah to the Division of General Surgery. Dr. Jastaniah is an exceptional general, acute and trauma surgeon with special expertise in critical care medicine. His academic background includes graduating with first-class honours from Umm Al-Qura University in Saudi Arabia in 2010, followed by the completion of his general surgery residency at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 2017 and a Master of Science. Dr. Jastaniah further honed his expertise through fellowships in adult critical care medicine, where he received additional training in ECMO from 2017-2019 at UBC. He then completed his trauma fellowship with us at 9I制作厂免费 in 2021.
After completing his trauma fellowship at 9I制作厂免费, we were fortunate to have Atif stay and contribute to our team during the challenging COVID-19 crisis. His experience with ECMO in the ICU was invaluable, as was his expertise in trauma and emergency surgery. His experience as a Clinical Associate at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto on the Acute Care Surgery Service for the past year also brings a fresh perspective to the management of acute care patients and emergency surgery. Already, this past year, he has worked diligently to launch our acute care surgery registry which contains over a thousand patients to date. Atif already has a dozen publications to his credit in peer-reviewed journals such as Injury, Journal of Trauma and Acute Care and the Surgical Clinics of North America.
Atif is deeply committed to the advancement of medical education. As a resident, he himself was recognized for his academic achievements with numerous clinical and teaching awards, including the W.H. Sutherland Memorial Award for Outstanding Clinical Performance and the C.H. Scudamore Clinical Award in Hepatobiliary Surgery at UBC. He has also received the Canadian Association of General Surgeons Award for Excellence in Teaching. His passion for teaching is evident in his involvement as an instructor for several key courses, including the International Definitive Skills in Trauma Course (DSTC), Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET), and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS). He is also the author of the new trauma cases for the undergraduate medical curriculum at 9I制作厂免费 which have received strongly positive feedback from our undergraduate learners.
Dr. Jastaniah continues to expand his skill set with certifications in point-of-care ultrasound and echo in the ICU, which will undoubtedly enhance the education of ICU residents and their training in critical care medicine.
We are excited to have Dr. Jastaniah join our division and look forward to the many contributions he will make to our department and the continued growth of medical education and patient care.
Please join us in welcoming him!
