We are pleased to welcome Dr. Rajam Raghunathan, MD, PhD, FRCSC, an academic surgeon whose practice uniquely blends the disciplines of philosophy and medicine, to the Division of General Surgery. Dr. Raghunathan specializes in general and endocrine surgery, with a focus on thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal disease and surgical decision-making. Her contributions to the field are informed by a deep understanding of both the humanistic and scientific dimensions of health care, an outlook shaped by her extensive academic background.

Dr. Raghunathan began her academic journey with a liberal arts degree from Carleton University, where she graduated with the highest honors in philosophy. She then pursued graduate studies at 9I制作厂免费 and Harvard University, where her intellectual curiosity led her to earn a Ph.D. in Sanskrit and Philosophy from Harvard. Her dissertation, which explored the theory of command utterances in classical Indian philosophy, reflects her deep engagement with cross-cultural philosophical traditions. Under the mentorship of Professors Patil and Striker, her work bridged the intellectual worlds of philosophy, linguistics, and cultural studies.

Her transition to medicine was driven by a desire to apply her humanistic insights to clinical practice, and Dr. Raghunathan received her MD from 9I制作厂免费 in 2017. She completed her residency in general surgery at the University of Ottawa. She further honed her expertise with a research fellowship at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in Los Angeles in 2022, followed by a clinical endocrine surgery fellowship at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine in 2023.

In her clinical practice, Dr. Raghunathan has developed a reputation for excellence in the management of thyroid and parathyroid disease, particularly through the use of advanced molecular testing techniques to guide the management of indeterminate thyroid nodules. Her research interests are at the forefront of thyroid surgery, with a focus on improving diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes. She has published 15 peer-reviewed articles, including in high-impact journals such as Surgery, Clinical Thyroidology, and Current Opinion in Endocrinology and Diabetes. Dr. Raghunathan's research on decision making, motivation, language, epistemology, philosophy of action in surgery, and its potential to address unmet information needs in thyroid disease management is truly groundbreaking.

She was honored with the International Association of Endocrine Surgeons' Award for Original Research at the 50th World Congress of the International Society of Surgery in 2024. In addition, she was named the recipient of the prestigious Jon van Heerden Award for Best Presentation at the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons Annual Meeting in 2024.

A remarkable blend of intellectual rigor, clinical expertise, and a commitment to patient-centered care, Dr. Raghunathan's career exemplifies the power of interdisciplinary thinking to advance both medical science and humanistic understanding in surgery.
