March 11 marks five years since the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. The following 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ experts are available to share their insights on the lasting impacts and the lessons learned. 

Christopher Labos, MD, and Associate, Office for Science and Society, can discuss the legacy of COVID-19, its impact on the health-care system and the rise of anti-vaccine rhetoric in the post-pandemic era. He can also discuss how bird flu differs from COVID-19 and the implications of the current measles outbreak.

David Juncker, Professor and Chair of Biomedical Engineering, can discuss Canada’s pandemic response, focusing on diagnostics and testing. He can provide insights into Quebec’s PCR testing, vaccination efforts and challenges in scientific decision-making. He can also address issues like diagnostic sovereignty, delays in rapid self-testing approval and regulatory barriers affecting domestic diagnostic manufacturing.

Jesse Shapiro, Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology & Immunology  can discuss how what we've learned from the pandemic about pathogen evolution, genomics and data sharing will help us prepare for future outbreaks.

Sasha Bernatsky, James 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ Professor, Divisions of Rheumatology and Clinical Epidemiology and senior scientist, Research Institute of the 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ Health Centre, led a major national study that helped shape COVID-19 vaccine guidelines for immunocompromised Canadians and contributed to efforts to improve how COVID-19 cases are identified and tracked worldwide.
